Sciatica Q&A

What is sciatica?

Sciatica is the name given to the pain your sciatic nerve can cause when it’s irritated or compressed. Your sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body, starting in your lower back and running down the backs of your buttocks and each of your legs to your feet.

Sciatica originates in your lower back and is typically caused by:

  • A herniated or bulging disc
  • A bone spur
  • Spinal stenosis, which is a narrowing of your spinal canal

Many factors put you more at risk of developing sciatica by enabling the conditions listed above, including:

  • Age
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Poor posture
  • Prolonged sitting
  • Repetitive stress on your lower back

Sciatica is rarely the result of an accident or trauma but develops gradually along with the underlying condition.

What are the symptoms of sciatica?

The hallmark of sciatica is a pain, which can be dull and throbbing or acute and severe, especially with certain movements like sneezing. This pain usually radiates down one side of your buttock and travels down your leg. How far this pain travels depends upon the extent of the nerve compression or irritation.

In addition to the pain, you may also feel:

  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Weakness in your leg

Although sciatica may be responsible for many unpleasant symptoms, you don't have to live with them when there are treatment options available.

How is sciatica treated?

Sciatica is very easy to diagnose just on the symptoms alone, but Dr. Bieganski, DC, likes to understand the whole picture so that he can best address the source of the problem. To that end, after a complete analysis of your back using diagnostic imaging, he works with you to come up with a treatment plan that meets your immediate and long-term goals.

With sciatica, however, it’s imperative to address the pain. To do that, Dr. Bieganski, DC, adjusts your spine to relieve the pressure on your sciatic nerve. It may take several adjustments to release the nerve completely, but the end result not only relieves your pain, but it also encourages your body’s natural healing response to come in and get to work.

Between adjustments, your body is better able to reduce the inflammation and repair the area thanks to Dr. Bieganski’s work in correcting the misalignments that caused blockages in your body’s flow.
